Houston Audubon Sanctuaries

Houston Audubon meets its mission of promoting birds and conservation of their habitat primarily by owning and managing bird sanctuaries. Its land acquisition program began in 1987 with the purchase of land on the Bolivar Peninsula and has grown steadily since then by further purchases and by donations and bequests. Today it owns 17 sanctuaries in five counties totaling 3,384 acres.

Bolivar Beach Rambles
by Pete Deichmann

Come explore Bolivar Flats Shorebird Sanctuary and see what the forces of nature have left for us on the beach and in the wrack lines with Conservation Specialist Pete Deichmann. You’ll walk along the beach and out onto the flats discovering the diversity of life along the gulf coast. It’s a perfect opportunity for a family day trip. [More]

Volunteer at ELM Natives Nursery

Every Friday morning Houston Audubon volunteers work in the Natives Nursery at Edith L. Moore Nature Sanctuary, separating seedlings and bumping up wildflowers and grasses into 1-gallon containers. The plants are used in coastal prairie restoration projects or are offered for sale in support of the Bird-Friendly Community program. [More]

ELM Family Workdays

Bolivar Flats Shorebird Sanctuary Expands
by Richard Gibbons, Conservation Director
Johnson addition
Margo Johnson wanted the grazing lands and family property to be kept as is, a safe, open place for wildlife on the Bolivar Peninsula. With a history of working with Houston Audubon and a love for birding and all things Bolivar, Margo Johnson approached Houston Audubon to ask if there was interest in adding the property to the famed Bolivar Flats Shorebird Sanctuary. Being the corner piece of the sanctuary and having wetland and prairie habitat mostly intact made this project an easy decision for the Sanctuaries Committee and Board of Directors.
