Introduction to Ornithology: June 25 - July 23, 2009
The first in a series of classes to study the remarkable physiology of birds that make them such amazing creatures of flight, migration, and beauty.
Some, but not all, of the topics to be discussed in this first class include the theories on the origin of birds, a brief history of ornithology in North America, Taxonomic Classification and Scientific Nomenclature, the different types of feathers, their structure and purpose as well as the names and placement of feather groupings on a bird's body.
While the material of this class is not "field identification" type information, much of the information will prove valuable "in the field" for a broader perspective of birds and a deeper understanding of birds and their behavior.

About the Instructor
Glenn Olsen has had a passionate interest in nature, especially birds, since early childhood. He also offers birding, landscaping, and nature related classes through Rice University's Continuing Studies Department that are co-sponsored by HAS. As a member of the Houston Audubon Society, he has served as Vice-President of Education. Since 1993, he has been actively involved with the Native Plant Society of Texas and has served as State President. Glenn has taught HAS classes for two years.
