Miss Betty's Good-bye
I spent a most gratifying fourteen years as the first Coordinator of the Audubon Docent Guild - thanks to a dedicated group of volunteers who enjoy sharing their love of nature with others. Now I feel very comfortable turning over that position to Bethany Foshée. She's well-educated, competent, capable, charming - and, most importantly, she, too, enjoys sharing her love of nature with others. It's a very good fit.
I'm now looking forward to having a little more time to garden, to read, to re-organize my overstuffed closets and file drawers, to relish my three little Houston granddaughters - and to enjoy once again being an Audubon Docent Guild volunteer. I'll see you all on the ELMNS trails!
— Elizabeth (Miss Betty) Henderson
From Our New Coordinator ...
Miss Betty and I have been hard at work in the ADG office these last few months, as Betty has been patiently and astutely guiding me through all the inner workings of coordinating the Audubon Docent Guild education programs. I am honored and excited to carry on our mission of educating children and families at Edith L Moore, and privileged as well to 'carry the torch' that Miss Betty has so fearlessly led us with as coordinator of the Audubon Docent Guild.
So as a new year begins here at Audubon, I wanted to take a moment to introduce myself to all of you.
I grew up in Houston, and some of my fondest childhood memories are playing along, and sometime even in, White Oak Bayou with my brothers. I also come from a long line of Aggies, and I graduated from Texas A&M in 2002 with my BS in Wildlife & Fisheries Sciences. I spent 2 and a half years teaching Environmental Education for HISD and the Houston Zoo, and then went back to school (and right back to Aggieland) to work towards my Masters in Parks & Recreation Management. During graduate school, I researched and catalogued the natural and cultural resources of Buffalo Bayou, in support of Buffalo Bayou receiving Natural Heritage Area status within the National Park Service. (Congress should vote soon, so keep your fingers crossed!)
I have also worked for several wonderful organizations in town these past few years, including the Buffalo Bayou Partnership, Memorial Park Conservancy, Houston Arboretum & Nature Center, and YES Prep Schools, where I taught environmental science to an inspirational group of ninth and tenth graders.
My greatest passion in life is inspiring our children with a love and appreciation for nature, and I am honored and thrilled to work with all of you as we work toward this goal together!
— Bethany Foshée, Audubon Docent Guild Coordinator
Audubon Docent Guild Spring Training: February 9
Do you enjoy sharing your love of nature with children? Then, please join us at our Spring Docent Training on February 9th, 9:00 am to noon, at the Edith L. Moore Nature Sanctuary cabin.
The Audubon Docent Guild is a group of volunteers who lead nature education programs at the Houston Audubon Society's Edith L. Moore Nature Sanctuary. We conduct guided tours of the Sanctuary, weekly nature story hours for preschoolers, children's nature-theme birthday parties, night-time owl prowls, summer nature day camps, and outreach programs in school classrooms and public libraries. We also have opportunities on our Tuesday Trail Crew here at the Sanctuary.
E-mail me (Bethany Foshée at docent@houstonaudubon.org) or call us at 713-464-4900 for registration or if you have any questions. We'd love to have you join our group!
