Adult Teams

Avid Avosits Team Leader: Pam Smolen Team Members: Don Verser, Flo Hannah, Betsy Black, Gary Gray, Mary Ann Beauchemin We are participating in the sitting duck competition. News Update: Members of this group (Pam Smolen, Mary Ann Beauchemin (minus husband Gary), Don and Bo Verser, Marcy Brown, Betsy Black) were a team named the Vopak Vultures that won the 12th Annual Great Texas Birding Classic Lone Star Bird Award, $3000 Funding Proposal Selection. The team practiced on the observation deck at Anahuac with the HAS Birdathon for the Big Sit for the GTBC. They stayed at the same location and won a prize. Click on photo for a larger image

Birders of Paradise Team Leader: Stephen Shunk Team Members: Sandy Moore Stephen is doing a Birdathon on April 28 during his Paradise Birding tour of coastal Brazoria County. He invites HAS members to join him on this day and a portion of the tour fee will be donated to Houston Audubon. He has also offered to donate a portion of the tour fee for any HAS member who joins him on any other day(s) of these tours in the Hill Country or East Texas. Tour Details.

Honeyguides Team Leader: Bob Honig Team Member: Maggie Honig This year we are doing our Birdathon on the Warren Ranch to call attention to a very valuable piece of habitat. The Katy Prairie Conservancy (KPC) has a majority interest in the 6,000+-acre Warren Ranch in west Harris County, but the property will not be permanently protected until a $12 million loan (needed to save the ranch from development) is paid off. (We hope to do another Birdathon later in the year to support that cause.) In order to cover the ranch, we'll be doing our Birdathon in our hybrid Ford Escape (so we'll still not consume too much gas, though more than in the past several years when we have done our Birdathon by bicycle). We are longtime birders who strongly support Houston Audubon's mission to promote the conservation of birds and wildlife habitat. Although we may have to change our name to Achy Shins by the end of our Big Birdathon Day, we plan to have a great time seeing lots of birds as we head east the morning of April 25th. Houston Audubon Hawks Team Leader: Luke Downey Team Members: Justice Haynes, Iain Godwin, Keri Bryan The Houston Audubon Hawks participated in the Birdathon last year as well as in the Great Texas Birding Classic. It is participating in both the Birdathon and the Great Texas Birding Classic again this year.
