San Bernard NWR: Friday, December 14, 2007
This unique count provides opportunities to bird areas of the refuge not normally open to the public including a newly-acquired tract along the west end of CR306, the Bludworth tract along Cocklebur Slough (2003 acquisition) and the nearby McNeill tract which now boasts the official state champion live oak. Also open for counters is the state's Nannie Stringfellow Wildlife Management Area. We have rail buggy slots open for those hoping to see Yellow Rail and possibly even Black Rails. This count also claims some of the best hospitality around with the refuge staff providing an air boat, rail buggy, and 4WD trucks. We will have our historic chef Ron Bisbee teaming up with our chef from last year, Marty Cornell, this year cooking the famous countdown dinner of seafood gumbo! Although this count still provides the small count atmosphere, it has plenty of big count diversity with 190 or more species over the past few years. You can join us by contacting either of us or by showing up at the refuge headquarters on CR306 at 0630 hours the morning of December 14th. Co-compilers Ron Weeks  (or phone evenings 979-299-0066) or Jennifer Wilson (or phone daytime 979-849-7771).

Brazos Bend State Park: Saturday, December 15, 2007
Participants will meet at 6:30 AM at Brazos Bend State Park Nature Center located about 2 miles beyond the entrance kiosk for assignment. We will depart for our coverage areas at 7:00 AM. All levels of expertise are welcome to participate, especially beginners. Experienced leadership will be assigned for all groups. The park entry fee is waived for count participants. NOTE: It's best to bring a lunch (and drinks) as there are no food options in the area. There will be a count-down dinner following the count for all participants just after sunset at the center. Contact Fred Land, 972-628-3136, or Bill Godley, 281-341-6684, for more information. See Brazos Bend 2007 CBC Flyer for areas covered, history and last year's "special birds".

Houston: Saturday, December 15, 2007
This count includes the area around Baytown. Please contact David Sarkozi, or phone 713-412-4409 or an area leader to sign up, and for assignments and further information. The count down dinner will be at Lee Palace Chinese Restaurant, 6942 Garth Rd.

Turkey Creek: Saturday, December 15, 2007
This count in Hardin and Tyler Counties includes the Turkey Creek and Hickory Creek Savannah Units of the Big Thicket National Preserve. Meet at the Big Thicket Visitor Center on US69 at FM420, about 7 miles north of Kountze at 6:30 AM. Sponsored by the Big Thicket National Preserve. Contact Paula Rivers at 409-951-6720 or John Whittle for more information.

Freeport: Sunday, December 16, 2007
Open to all participants. Begun by Victor Emanuel, for many years the Freeport Count was usually the top count in the nation and finds the largest number of species of any on the Upper Texas Coast. It still usually ranks among the top five with an average total of 217 species. Just three years ago we again reached the all-time count high of 226 species. Habitat includes seashore, barrier islands, prairie & woodland. Access to Brazoria National Wildlife Refuge, Dow Chemical Company lands, and the Gulf shore provide an amazing variety of habitat and often produce rare winter birds for the Upper Texas Coast such as Least Grebe, Summer Tanager, Sage Thrasher, Masked Booby, and assorted warblers. The count is organized and reported by compiler Mike Austin. Victor Emanuel remains an honorary co-compiler and an active participant in the count. The Freeport Christmas Bird Count works through its co-compilers and is divided into ten areas with their own leader & unique habitats. First-time participants should contact Mike Austin by e-mail or by telephone (281-992-8888). For information and assignments, contact Mike Austin, the compiler.

Mad Island Marsh: Monday, December 17, 2007
Most of the count is on private land and participation in the CBC is the only way to gain access to some very productive wildlife lands. The diversity of the CBC is great and most sections have multiple exclusives. The CBC features extensive native grasslands, brushlands, floodplain forests, beaches and coastal marshes. Contact Brent Ortego count assignments. More information on Brent Ortego's web site.

Galveston: Tuesday, December 18, 2007
Anyone who would like to participate is welcome! Please contact me, Dwight Peake, at dpeake1@houston.rr.com or you may call me at 409-740-4621 (please give your name and call back number slowly and clearly).  All of the Areas in this count circle have great birding! It is a wonderful count like Attwater, but the two contrast sharply. Attwater may have the highest species total for a totally inland site, and Galveston may get the highest number of species relative to the land area available in the count circle since most of it is water. This count also includes Bolivar Flats Shorebird Sanctuary and Horseshoe Marsh Bird Sanctuary. For the Countdown we will be meeting at the Golden Corral Restaurant just west of 61st St on the Seawall. Most people will get there between 5-6PM.

Attwater Prairie Chicken NWR: Wednesday, December 19, 2007
This is a wonderful opportunity to bird the Attwater Prairie Chicken NWR. Anyone interested in participating in this CBC must contact Sumita Prasad prior to the CBC date so that we have a head count. Participants should expect to meet at the refuge headquarters in Eagle Lake by 6:15 AM and bring lunch and whatever gear necessary (rain gear, snacks, etc.) for a good day's birding. The countdown dinner will be held at the Sportsman's Restaurant in Eagle Lake, TX at sundown. If you need directions to the refuge headquarters, please contact Justin Roach, Assistant Refuge Manager, by phone 979-234-3021 or visit the Attwater NWR web site. Should you have any additional questions, comments, or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact the compiler, Sumita Prasad. Many, many thanks for your interest and participation in the Attwater NWR CBC.

Bolivar Peninsula: Saturday, December 22, 2007
Meet at the Boy Scout Woods HAS Sanctuary, High Island at 7:00 AM. The count circle in Chambers County includes High Island and Anahuac NWR and is regularly one of the top 20 counts in the country. The countdown dinner is held at Al-T's Cajun Restaurant in Winnie. Newcomers are welcome to join! Please call compiler Bill Graber at 409-866-5452 to participate. Area Leader for the Anahuac NWR is David Sarkozi. Anahuac NWR Description: Anahuac NWR is a huge area to cover, and we can always use more help. This will be a great chance to visit some areas you may not always have access to. As usual the Rail Buggy will be going out and this is a chance for a Yellow Rail without going on one of my infamous Yellow Rail "Death Marches" in the spring. We also usually get Sora and Virginia Rail. Short-eared Owl, Burrowing Owl, and Black Rail are possible too. There are some great areas for sparrows, we can usually count on 12 species of sparrows, and have chances at other goodies like Henslow's, White-crowned, and Harris. Vermillion Flycatcher is usually seen, also Ash-throated Flycatcher. You're welcome to meet us at the Visitor Information Center at the Anahuac NWR at 7 AM. You don't have to let me know before, but I would appreciate knowing you're coming, helps plan who will cover what. Remember, you don't need to be an expert, its a good chance to learn a lot fast if you're new in great place. The most important person in all CBC groups is the person who accurately records the numbers, not the one who's calling them out. Contact David Sarkozi, telephone 713-412-4409, about the Anahuac NWR part of the count.

Johnson Bayou - Southwest Louisiana: Sunday, December 23, 2007
Johnson Bayou CBC has a rich history beginning in 1976 to present. While much of the area is private, local land owners have allowed access to their property for this count, areas rarely birded and normally inaccessible to birders at other times offering a good chance for oddities. We have permission from the land owners ie. Gray Estate and Crain Brothers to be on their properties. Areas covered include beach, costal cheniers, marsh and grasslands. Johnson Bayou is located off Hwy 82 in Louisiana just across from Pleasure Island, TX (east of Sabine Pass). From Port Arthur take Hwy 82 east for about 15 miles into LA. The school sits between a store and the Head-of-the-Hallow Cemetery. Last year's count included White-tailed Kite, Crested Caracara, Merlin, a number of LeConte's Sparrows, Seaside Sparrow, Blue Grosbeak, Indigo Bunting. American Woodcock, Peregrine Falcon and Chuck-will's-widow were seen on the 2005 count. Meet at 7:00 AM at the Johnson Bayou school. This count has great potential with enough observers. We always need more birders on this count and this is a great chance to find a "one-of-a-kind" bird for a CBC. Every birder WILL make an impact on the results of this count. Please contact Ken Sztraky, telephone 409-385-2835, for more information, assignments and directions.

Trinity River: Wednesday, December 26, 2007

Armand Bayou: Saturday, December 29, 2007
Come for the birds, come for the fun, but just come! Volunteers are needed in the field and in backyards. Armand Bayou's count includes areas of LaPorte, League City, Dickinson, Seabrook and Baycliff (and lots of places in between), so we need your help. We meet at 6:30 AM at Armand Bayou Nature Center. We will also be owling at ABNC (5:30 AM-ish) Please contact Christine Battan, telephone 281-316-0808, to register get signed up for an area and for further details. Thank you!

Buffalo Bayou: Saturday, December 29, 2007
The Buffalo Bayou CBC is centered at the Houston Audubon Society's Edith L. Moore Sanctuary. It extends from Memorial Park on the east to beyond Highway 6 on the west; from the Southwest Freeway at West Belt on the south to FM 529 near Jersey Village on the north. This area includes sizable chunks of excellent habitat: Houston Arboretum, Art Storey Park, Addicks & Barker Reservoirs, Bear Creek Park and Buffalo Bayou. There are two ways to participate: (1) Be a Field Observer - Join one of the teams in the field that survey various sites within the count circle. There is a $5 fee for participants in the field to help defray the National Audubon's data processing and publishing costs.  (2) Be a Feeder/Yard Watcher - Because so much of the Buffalo Bayou CBC area is residential, Feeder Watchers (those who stay at home and observe their feeder, yard and/or neighborhood) are extremely important to the count and greatly increase the efficiency of the count by observing species that otherwise would not be seen, such as hummingbirds. Feeder Watchers don't pay a participation fee and submitting your observations is easy via an on-line data form accessible on the web site. For more information, see the Buffalo Bayou CBC web site. Contacts are organizers Lucien Bouffard and Michael Williams at txbfcbc@houstonarboretum.org (preferred contact method) or via phone, respectively at 713-366-0377 or 832-723-0653.

Huntsville: Saturday, December 29, 2007
Sponsored by the Huntsville Audubon Society. All who can assist, please meet at 7:00 AM in front of Shipley's Donuts in Huntsville. Someone will be there with maps and any further instructions for the count. If you have never participated and want to help, please contact Brenda Muncrief, or you can just show up on the date, but please don't be late! Brenda Muncrief, President Huntsville Audubon Chapter, will be leading the in-town route which is always interesting. The count will culminate that evening with our annual countdown spaghetti dinner at Dr. Jimmy Long's house. The board is taking care of the spaghetti and spaghetti sauce (meat sauce, vegetarian sauce and Glenn Coker's meatballs and sauce!), and garlic bread. There will be at least one salad and one dessert from the board, but please fill in with additional side dishes and desserts so that we have a bountiful dinner to go with out anticipated bountiful bird count!! San Jacinto Wilderness: Saturday, January 5, 2008   New Count!
Love to bird, but also love to bike, canoe, or kayak? Here's your chance to combine two loves. This new count takes in Lake Houston Park and Houston Audubon's own Damuth Preserve, as well as the underbirded marshlands around Dayton, TX. This count has the potential for being one of the most diverse and species-rich of any inland circle. The reasons for this are very clear: Lake Houston Park and Damuth Preserve together comprise over 5500 acres of Big Thicket flatwoods, riparian forest, sloughs, wet meadows, and creek frontage. The Dayton Prairie, in the SE quadrant, is an underbirded waterfowl paradise. In direct contrast to the rest of the circle, it is comprised of wide open fields and little-traveled roads that make for great scope work and tremendous wintering habitat for prairie birds. The western half of the circle is crisscrossed by several rural highways with wide, well-marked shoulders that provide excellent birding by bike. Four major tributaries of the San Jacinto Watershed course through this area, allowing for tremendous aquabirding potential. On the 2007 shakedown run, 19 observers saw over 5,000 birds of 80 different species. Many of these were seen by a party of 3 in kayaks! Come and get in on the ground floor as we kick off our first official count in '08! The rendezvous for the whole count will be at 7 AM, at the Brookshire Brothers parking lot - 20185 US Highway 59 Ste 69, New Caney, TX 77357. Count Coordinator: David F. Henderson.

A countdown dinner is held starting at sunset at Nolan Ryan's Bass Inn on Hwy. 72 west of Three Rivers. Coverage of the count circle is arranged prior to count day. Groups are assigned the night before, and each group is responsible for getting themselves going in the morning, so there is no pre-count meeting and no "official" start time other than "first light". Owling will be conducted starting at 12:01 AM. Please contact Paul Sunby if interested for further details.

Chaparral Wildlife Management Area: Saturday, December 15, 2007
The Chaparral Wildlife Management Area invites you to participate in our annual count; its a lot of fun with nice people. The event takes place rain or shine and the more eyes we have looking the more birds we find. Birders, beginners to advanced, interested in participating should contact me at the email or phone listed below. Once we know how many are participating, we assign teams so we can get thorough coverage. The CWMA consists of 15,200 acres of South Texas brush country.
