Next survey: October 11.
August 9, 2008 Survey Results - 46 species (Excel spreadsheet)
August 9 report: We would like to build a larger group so we may cover more areas of the nature center. As many of you know, the nature center has quite a large area of land and various habitats to monitor; these areas include large woodlands, prairie, and watershed. I have always thought Armand is severely under-birded and we can do a much better with a larger number of people, broken down into groups to check different sections. We have a few areas I would also like to expand our counts into that are rarely if ever looked at, except for our annual Christmas Bird Counts. If we can get more people, we will definitely move into these new sections. If you know birders who would be interested, please help us build this group. Remember, this count not only helps Audubon but also is of a great value to the understanding and monitoring the diverse bird species that visit the Armand Bayou area!
I look forward to hearing from you all and hope to see you Saturday, September 13, 2008. Please let me know if you think you will make it as we may try one of the new areas if I can put a few groups together. If anyone has questions, you may email me.
- Andrew Hamlett, Leader, Armand Bayou Nature Center Survey
Background Information
Houston Audubons conducts monthly bird surveys of the Armand Bayou Nature Center property. The survey is held on the second Saturday of each month. The survey uses Christmas count protocol. This is your opportunity to have early access to all ABNC grounds and provide much needed data on all the avian inhabitants of ABNC, a precious island of wilderness amongst urban sprawl. Volunteer birders and area leaders are needed for this project. To participate, meet Andrew at 7:00 AM in the Armand Bayou Nature Center parking lot. We will compile results no later than 10:00 AM. Bring binocs, fluid, sun and insect protection.
