Spirit, the Red-tailed Hawk

by Mary Anne Weber, Education Director

SpiritSpirit has inspired children and adults alike as an educational ambassador for more than 25 years. She helps me teach about birds, raptors, migration, habitat conservation and the importance of our wildlife laws. Spirit was injured as a juvenile in western Montana. No longer able to fly, she has gracefully accepted a new life in captivity.

Spirit has been with me for many, many years, and I never tire of caring for her. When younger, she was a surrogate mother to orphaned red-tails that were later released into the wild. Even though she now lives by herself, Spirit builds a nest every year and lays an egg. Her diet consists of two large rats a day, which Houston Audubon buys from a company in Florida called The Gourmet Rodent. They are shipped to us frozen every few months. (Once, when my Dad picked them up from the airport, air cargo personnel wanted to know what restaurant they were for.)

With your help, Spirit can continue to inspire future generations for years to come. We need your support to pay for food and vet bills. By making a contribution to our Adopt-A-Bird program, you will receive a beautiful photo of Spirit and a special certificate. (Please allow two weeks for processing.) It is a worthwhile way to help us show what extraordinary creatures birds are and why we need to protect them.
