Poco was rescued from a home in Austin where he was confined in a small bird cage. He was in very poor condition when turned over to Houston Audubon: His primary feathers were badly damaged, and he lacked the muscles to fly as well. After a nice molt and steady diet of mice and sunshine, Poco quickly discovered his wings. He now spends his day napping in the sunshine in a large outdoor aviary and getting lots of exercise at night catching anything that wanders into his space.
Poco is always popular at school presentations, where most youngsters think he is a baby owl. He delights his audiences by flying across the room and into his travel box after each program. Poco doesn’t have the instincts to survive in the wild, but he is very busy teaching young and old about the amazing world of birds. Visit with Poco and the other education owls during the Owl Prowls, put on by the Audubon Docent Guild at the Edith L. Moore Nature Sanctuary.
We need your help to continue caring for our teaching birds, such as Poco. Please make a contribution to our Adopt-A-Bird program. Poco can’t respond to fan mail, but he would love some sponsors.
In exchange for your generous help, you will receive a 5"x7" beautiful photo of your adopted bird and a special adoption certificate. (Please allow two weeks for processing.) Donations go toward food (lots of mice), upkeep of aviaries and vet check-ups. Thanks for your help.
