Eastern Kingbird image © David McDonald
Family: (Tyrannidae) Tyrant Flycatchers
Preferred Habitat: Rural, open country.
Seasonal Occurrence: Common spring through fall.
Notes: Eastern Kingbirds are fairly common in open, rural country, but usually not found in urban settings. They are bold, aggressive birds and will chase much larger birds in defense of their nest. The broad white band at the end of their tails is the best identification clue. They also have a narrow strip of red feathers on their crown, but that is usually hidden.
The Houston Bird Survey has more information and a distribution map for the Eastern Kingbird.
