Great Kiskadee (Pitangus sulphuratus)

Bird Gallery Index

Great Kiskadee Great Kiskadee image © Wayne Wendel

Family: (Tyrannidae) Tyrant Flycatchers

Preferred Habitat: Woodlands near water.

Seasonal Occurrence: Rare in all seasons.

Notes: A south Texas species, Great Kiskadees may sometimes be found on the Upper Texas Coast. When they are seen they are easy to recognize as there is no other species on the UTC with their combination of colors. Also helpful is their tendency to perch in the open and be quite vocal. They mainly hunt insects but sometimes may be spotted hunting for small fish.

The Houston Bird Survey has more information and a distribution map for the Great Kiskadee.
