Northern Shoveler (Anas clypeata)

Bird Gallery Index

Northern Shoveler - male Northern Shoveler (breeding male plumage) image © David McDonald

Family: (Anatidae) Ducks, Geese, and Swans

Preferred Habitat: Marshy ponds and lakes

Seasonal Occurrence: Abundant October through April

Notes: The Northern Shoveler is aptly named, with its impressively long spatulate bill. The bill is longer than the head. It often swims with its neck extended and bill partially submerged, pushing the bill through the water for food. Both males and females have a blue wing patch which is prominent in flight. Northern Shovelers are one of the most common ducks on the Katy Prairie.
