Family: (Rallidae) Rails, Gallinules and Coots
Preferred Habitat: Marshes.
Seasonal Occurrence: Permanent resident. Most common spring and fall
Notes: Soras are our most common rail. Particularly in March and April they can be relatively easy to find in suitable habitat. Typical sightings are along the edge of marshes. Adult Soras are distinctive with their black faces and bright yellow bills. Juveniles are a more confusing brown with dull bills; they are sometimes mistaken for the much less common Yellow Rail. The call is a plaintive, rising ker-wee.
