Bird Gallery Index

Family:  (Anatidae) Ducks, Geese and Swans

Preferred Habitat: Bays and oceans

Seasonal Occurrence: Uncommon December through March.

Notes: Scoters are bulky sea ducks that are spotted in coastal waters; they are usually spotted close to shore as they dive for shellfish. The nickname for Surf Scoter is Skunk-head because of its striking facial and bill colors. Females are dark brown with a few diffuse white patches on face and bill. When seen close-up, the distinctive bill is diagnostic. Surf Scoters are the most commonly seen Scoter in Texas.
