Family:  (Phalacrocoracidae) Cormorants

Preferred Habitat: Beaches, lakes and rivers.

Seasonal Occurrence: Abundant winter and spring. Common in the fall.

Notes: The Double-crested Cormorant is not only found along the coast but is also the only cormorant likely to be found inland. It is our most common cormorant in winter and small numbers also nest in our area. Earlier in the 20th century, the numbers of Double-crested Cormorants were diminishing dramatically because of human persecution and pesticide problems. After it was given more protection, it has rebounded until now it is our most abundant cormorant. Double-crested Cormorants nest in colonies, either on cliffs, rocky islands or in trees.
