Bank Swallow (Reparia reparia)

Bird Gallery Index

Bank Swallow Bank Swallow image © Greg Lavaty

Family: (Hirundinidae) Swallows

Preferred Habitat: Open country.

Seasonal Occurrence: Common spring and fall; rare in summer.

Notes: Banks Swallows are dark brown above with a well-defined chest band. (Compare with Northern Rough-winged Swallows who are similar in coloring). Bank Swallows are highly social and usually found in groups. They excavate their nests in dirt banks, such as riverbanks. They do not breed in our area. The Houston Bird Survey has more information and a distribution map for Bank Swallows.
