Marbled Godwit (Limosa fedoa)

Bird Gallery Index

Marbled Godwit Marbled Godwit image © Joseph Kennedy. Image taken on 06/29/2007 on Bolivar Peninsula, Frenchtown Road.

Family: (Scolopacidae) Sandpiper, Phalaropes, and Allies

Preferred Habitat: Tidal flats and flooded prairies.

Seasonal Occurrence: Common fall through spring; uncommon in summer.

Notes: The Marbled Godwit is one of our largest sandpipers, and its long, slightly upcurved bill makes it easy to identify. Marbled Godwits do not breed here but rather in the northern prairies. In breeding plumage the chest is marked with brown bars.
